How is your electronics laboratory or rework station dealing with surface-mount devices (SMD)?  The labs I know have shelves and shelves of SMD resistor and capacitor reels.  When an engineer or a technician needs an SMD, he has to go look for a particular reel for the right value, gets one or more devices from the reel and walks back to his bench or work station.  Or the SMD are stored in an array of small containers with lids.  In case of round vials with tight lids their access is tedious, and those vials take up substantial area and space.  With square plastic containers and their snap-to-close lids, the risk of mixing – oops! – the tiny and look-alike components is very high.  Now think about the whole process.  Many minutes spent to get a device that costs pennies.  Multiply those minutes by the number of components or changes of component value often needed during engineering debug, and you can see your company’s profit going down the drain, or your competitors beating your company in getting earlier to the marketplace.

 It’s a book with four or more leaves, each leaf comprises up to 24 tubular compartments for easy storage and error-free retrieval of all sorts of SMD, from resistors to integrated circuits and power transistors.  Each compartment can store up to 7 strips (also called cut tapes) of 60 resistors each, or 420 SMD per compartment. Mini-Lab SMD books are made of durable - virtually unbreakable - polycarbonate, also known under LexanTM

 Each device is stored in their original cut tapes in a clearly labeled compartment, in logical order for easy retrieval.  The size of each leaf is 10.5 x 9”, just a wee bit smaller than the common three-ring binders.  A flap fastened with loop-and-hook dots prevents the strips of SMD from dislodging during transportation.

Mini-Lab SMD storage books come in different thickness, from 4 leaves for the thinnest to 20 leaves for the vertical book.  The latter is called Mega-Lab™ for its 480 compartments.  That’s most likely the only SMD storage book each engineer and technician will ever need on his bench. Active components (diodes, zeners, transistors etc...) are stored inside their original anti-ESD polypropylene strips so they're safe with the Mini-Lab SMD books.  We also have leaves with 14mm spacing for storing IC and power semiconductors.

 Mini-Lab series of SMD books are offered in three sizes: Micro-Lab book with 6 leaves or 144 compartments, Mini-Lab book with 10 leaves or 240 compartments, and Mega-Lab book with 20 leaves or 480 compartments.  Mega-Lab book can stand on its side for easy access to any component and can probably accommodate all SMDs, passive and active, that a lab may ever need.  Yet it’s so compact and ergonomic that every engineer or technician will want to get one for himself to save time searching for those tiny SMDs.  Note: all current kits are for 0805 SMD.  However, kits ordered in resale quantities can be made with any SMD size.
